Coding In The Netherlands

Code Camp at the NOS, National Broadcast Institute the Netherlands

On May 29 2016 NOS Academy hosted a 1 day Code Avengers Code camp for the children of their staff. The NOS is the Dutch National Broadcast institution and the group was even invited to visit the studios from which the daily children news is broadcasted. The 60 children were in between 7 and 14 years old.

Coding classes at Hilversum:

Shortly before the summer holidays in the Netherlands, CodeAvengers organized several coding classes at both primary and secondary schools in the NL. For example at the Vondelschool (a primary school), where about 55 kids aged 7 to 11 learnt to build their own game and Wiki JR webpages while doing the online lessons on the CodeAvengers platform. The kids really loved the fact that they were actually learning “the real code" and now could show their mom and dad how to create a website, including links to other pages, pictures and movies. They were very enthusiastic and continued the online lessons, even after school hours, just because they loved it!

At the secondary school we did a project in line with the 21 century skills set as is designed by the government. The students worked on an idea for an app and actually created it: it is called Talking Teachers. The app gives teachers the opportunity to easily send their students small feedback messages or reminders, so the students are more actively involved in their classes. It uses the students' most favorite way of communication: the phone ;-) The students had to develop coding skills, design skills, a marketing plan and even a press release. Teamwork was needed to be able to succeed.

The 25 3rd year students of the Gemeentelijk Gymnasium (high level highschool) completed the project on the last day before their summer holidays. Especially the 8 students in the team responsible for the “technical development” of the app (see picture) did a great job: they finished the complete level of JavaScript 1 as well as the lessons that the Code Avengers team especially developed for this program. The lessons are available in Web Development level 3, if you would like to do a similar project with your class.
